During the last couple of weeks, Microsoft’s Bing has made some good impressions on people. It was a hot topic and everybody was talking about it. Microsoft has already planned to invest squander $100 million on advertisement on its latest attempt to take market share away from Google in search.
Blind tests have shown that the search results among Google, Bing, and Yahoo are in fact pretty similar. The reality, however, is that the search results are irrelevant. Nobody believes that Windows can be challenged by a Windows-like OS? Why in the world do people at Microsoft believe that Google can be overtaken by a Google-like search engine?
IMHO, if Bing is to succeed, Microsoft needs to start thinking small rather than big; take risks and make decisions that are difficult for Google to follow. And no, it doesn’t mean to show clips of videos when I move my mouse over the thumbnails.
Idea #1: We don’t just take on anybody: Let Google have all the business from the spammers and scams. Here at Bing, we simply don’t welcome those. Tell us if you fell for a scam site from our sponsored links. Not only will the site and its owner be banned forever from advertising with us, you will also get your money back.
Idea #2: We want you to leave us: Our goal isn’t to get you to use our search engine so that we can sell ads. We are committed to help you to find your answers as quickly and as easily as possible. That means if Google or Yahoo offers a “better” solution, we want you to leave us. In fact, here at Bing, you are offered the choice to display multiple search results with ours side by side. You make the call, not us.
And maybe taking that $100 million advertisement budget and invest it in 20 new breakthrough technologies/concepts in areas aren’t dominated by Google or anybody else isn’t a bad idea either.
