The official word on Windows 7 is that it’s coming out this December.
I think instead of running a lot of ads, Microsoft ought to try something different:
- Include a free “early release” version of Windows 7 in every copy of Windows Vista sold three weeks before the actual release date.
- Google the phrases “Windows Vista Sucks”, and send the top 50 bloggers a free copy.
- Google the phrases “OS X rules”, and find and send the top 50 bloggers a free copy.
- For every purchase of Dell system with Windows Vista, throw in a free copy of Windows 7.
…Without prior announcements. The free version, of course, needs to function exactly like the actual product.
The idea is to get the people who are 1) paying for the OS, 2) unsatisfied with the current version of Windows, and/or 3) the most influential, to talk about them, and to reward those people by giving them bragging rights to the new OS before everybody else does.
No, it won’t be nearly as effective if Windows 7 turns out to be the most robust, reliable, flexible, and user-friendly operation system yet, but it sure beats another Microsoft commercial on NBC, doesn’t it?
