If you don’t want to read the whole article, here is a basic rundown: Rupert Murdoch expects to start charging for access to News Corporation’s newspaper websites within a year as he strives to fix a ”malfunctioning” business model.
I see two possible scenarios:
All News providers online adapts this model. In this scenario, we would have no choice but to pay for news access online. The question then becomes: who are we going to pay? Unfortunately for the news industry, there can only be one clear winner in each area. Whoever provides the most unique, compelling, insightful, in-depth, and on-time coverage on the topics that we find interest in, deserves our time, attention, and money. My guess is that News Corporation isn’t doing that right now, and I seriously doubt that they will look to change in that aspect of their “business model”.
Only a few News providers adapts this model. In this case, life goes on, and we still get News the way we do today.
Either way, it is very unlikely that News Corporation is going to win here. So as you can see, blaming the Internet isn’t really going to solve your problem, is it?
